Healthy Aging and Selenium

We’ve all heard the term aging gracefully. Many of us make life choices in our attempts to do so – we drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, eat healthy foods and get sufficient sleep and rest. These things are common knowledge, but there is another important choice to consider — healthy aging and selenium. Your body needs selenium to complete a very important process that destroys free radicals, which is a part of healthy aging.*

Slowing the Pace with Healthy Aging and Selenium

Without adequate selenium, the human body cannot produce an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase. And without this enzyme, the cells cannot produce the body’s master antioxidant called glutathione, which is THE most important substance to the healthy aging process.

A number of leading experts and groups in anti-aging agree that low selenium levels may be linked to age-related adverse health events: *

  • Bruce Ames, Ph.D., UC Berkeley, concludes: “Age-related diseases and conditions, including cancer, heart disease, and immune dysfunction, are prospectively associated with modest Se deficiency.”*
  • reports: Selenium “helps to increase effectiveness of vitamin E and acts as an antioxidant to protect cells from the free-radical damage that causes aging and is linked to many age-related diseases.”*
  • Stephen Daniells shares an epidemiological study that suggests “selenium supplements could slow age-related cognitive decline.”*

Getting enough selenium through food can be difficult, which is why Cypress Systems pioneered advances in science to create a selenium that is the closest to food form as possible. Our process creates selenium that mimics what is found in certain foods like Brazil nuts.

When looking for selenium supplements the natural food form of selenium might be referred to as organically bound selenium yeast** or Saccharomyces cerevisiae (s. cerevisiae). This process uses a healthy, non-pathogenic form of yeast (like that in beer and bread). Other forms of selenium that you might see in supplements, such as selenomethionine, are not what nature intended and do not provide the same health benefits.

Cypress System’s SelenoExcell is the most clinically tested type of selenium and was the pioneer ingredient used in clinical studies for the National Cancer Institute (see the video that explains more here).

Aging is inevitable and the experience can be exciting, provided we all keep our health to age gracefully. To find the brands containing SelenoExcell, read more on where to buy. ** Cypress Systems uses a unique process that organically binds selenium to yeast. In this case, “organic” means the selenium is bound to a protein. Our product meets the guidelines for organic certification but this is an entirely different meaning of organic than the one used here.
