We see “with” our eyes and “in” our brains, and the whole process of how vision works is simply fascinating. Additionally, the images composed in our brains are part of an interactive electrical and chemical system (brain, limbic, and endocrine) that equips us to “feel” what we see. So, we don’t just see a sunset; we feel it (identify with it and respond emotionally). Eye health is a remarkable gift that we should value.
To maintain healthy eyes, it helps to know: what we cannot see can hurt us. UV rays cause cumulative damage, which may not be noticeable on a daily basis. The American Academy of Ophthalmology states, “Diseases like cataract and eye cancers can take many years to develop, but each time we’re out in the sun without protection, we could be adding damage that adds to our risks for these serious disorders.”
The American Optometric Association states, “Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms, so you might not know a problem exists. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems can help prevent vision loss.” August is National Eye Exam Month, and the investment of time to get an eye exam is well worth it. We suggest you put it just above the need for your car’s oil change on your to-do list. As far as daily prevention, please keep in mind:
- The sun’s rays can pass through haze and thin clouds.
- Winter UV eye safety is just as important as the rest of the year.
- Sunglasses must be a wraparound style to prevent reflective UV radiation from reaching the eye.
Nutrition is another way to keep eyes healthy. A study in 2017 showed that GTF Chromium, an ingredient made by the makers of SelenoExcell also supports healthy vision for people at risk for diabetes.
